The author, Alex Kerr, is an American who has lived in Japan for many years and has consistently voiced critical opinions regarding the country's modern landscapes, tourism, and public works projects.
In this book, he visits six distinct regions in search of the "deep"—the authentic, profound—Japan: Kunisaki; Aomori (including Mt. Iwaki Shrine and the *Jūni-hon Yasu* cedars); the Ogasawara Islands; Hokkaido (including Yubari and Biei); Tokushima (including the former Ichiu Village and Kaiyo Town); and the Fukui-Kyoto area (including Heisen-ji Temple, Obama, and Hanase).
He conducts thorough research into a wide range of topics—such as the interplay between Shinto and Buddhism, architectural styles of shrines and temples, and the rise and fall of key local industries—while observing the places he visits with the meticulous attention of an artist sketching a scene.
This book was written by a specialist in Japanese castles. The author traveled to castles in France, Finland, and Spain and wrote the book based on those visits.
In French, the Palace of the Tuileries is not called a “palace,” but a “château,” which means “castle.” When the author toured the rooms of Versailles, he felt that, although Versailles is much larger and more luxurious, it was similar in feeling to the Ninomaru Palace at Nijo Castle.
More than 300 historic castles still exist in the Loire Valley. Among them, 21 castles and their gardens are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Many of these castles began as country homes or vacation houses, while some were first built as military forts. After the Hundred Years’ War, kings and nobles built new castles or remodeled old ones during the 15th and 16th centuries, creating many beautiful and elegant buildings.
Why is the painting Mona Lisa kept in the Louvre in France? Leonardo da Vinci was invited to France by King Francis I and moved there in 1516, bringing the unfinished Mona Lisa with him. He continued working on the painting in France. After da Vinci died, the painting was briefly taken back to Italy, but King Francis I bought it. It then became part of the French royal collection and later entered the Louvre Museum after the French Revolution. Francis I was also the king who built Château de Chambord, the largest castle in the Loire Valley.
Vauban was a famous French military engineer who served King Louis XIV. He perfected bastion-style fortresses, similar in shape to Hakodate’s Goryōkaku, although he did not invent the design. By the mid-18th century, cannons in Europe could shoot up to 5 kilometers, which made bastion-style forts no longer effective. Goryōkaku, built in the late 19th century, was already outdated when it was constructed. Its design was created by a Japanese scholar of Dutch studies, based on a book about artillery that he received from a French naval officer.
When comparing Japanese and European castles, an important difference can be seen. In Japan, castle building for military purposes ended in the early Edo period, so Japanese castles were not designed to resist cannon fire. During the Sengoku period, matchlock guns had a range of only 50 to 100 meters, and castle moats were usually 60 to 100 meters wide. In contrast, Vauban’s siege system was based on the cannon’s effective range of about 540 meters. Attackers dug trenches to move closer, while defenders tried to stop enemies from coming within that distance.
Since the financial crisis of 1998, the Japanese economy has experienced prolonged stagnation. Proponents of reflation attribute this to falling prices, while advocates of structural reform focus on labor productivity. The author of this book believes that stagnant real wages and consumption are the primary causes.
In the normal economic cycle and framework of macroeconomics, households save, companies use those savings to invest, and households receive wages and interest in return. Following the financial crisis, however, companies repaid their bank loans, cut labor costs, increased their retained earnings, and became savers themselves. Surplus funds flowed overseas rather than being channeled into domestic demand.
Since corporate net assets have increased, the rise in share prices is driven by growth in fundamentals rather than speculation. However, since households hold only 17 percent of shares, with financial institutions holding 28 percent and foreign investors holding 32 percent, increasing dividends will not lead to an expansion of domestic demand.
Since companies are effectively acting as savers, the Bank of Japan’s low-interest-rate policy has had no effect on capital investment. It was too early to tighten fiscal policy.
